5G Networks Will Power Life-Changing Applications

The massive advancements in broadband speed and reduction of latency in 5G networks, boosted by Edge computing, will change the ways in which we get around, work, play and interact with the world around us.


Open Hardware Platforms Will Enable Virtualised 5G Networks

5G networks are designed to leverage virtualisation and containers on open hardware platforms, causing a reduction in the dependence on legacy proprietary hardware.

The Radio Access Network (RAN) will be centralised and virtualised into server-based Centralised Units (CUs) and Distributed Units (DUs), minimising fixed-function hardware into Remote Radio Units (RRUs). Intelligent Edge servers will be able to support real-time applications with computing and AI inferencing.

4G Evolved Pocket Core (EPC) function will be replaced by 5G Core components running as virtualised network functions (VNFs) within data centres and in the cloud.


What is 5G?

5G is the 5th generation of mobile networks, a big jump and evolution from its predecessor 4G. 5G has been designed deal with the exponential growth in data and connectively in todays world. 5G will begin working in conjunction with the existing 4G networks before evolving to completely standalone network in following releases and expansion.


Advantages of 5G Technology


5G enables faster speed, allowing you to access files, programs and remote applications directly. This will lead to an enhanced use of the cloud and all devices will depend less and less on internal memory. It will no longer be necessary to install a multitude of processors on some objects as computing will be able to be done on the Cloud.


Latency refers to the amount time between the moment you give an order on your device and the moment the action occurs. 5G will reduce latency to 10% of the latency currently experienced with 4G. Lowered latency will open up new opportunities. For example, surgical operations in which the surgeon can intervene a patient on the side of the world with the aid of precision instruments manage remotely will become possible.


5G allows for the number of devices that can be connected to the network to increase massively. Every connected device will have access to instant connection to the internet, exchanging information with each other in real time. The increased number of connected devices will allow for smart cities and autonomous vehicles.


5G enables the implementation of virtual networks (network slicing), create subnets, to deliver connectivity more adjusted to specific needs and significantly improve efficiency.
